Integrated Multi-functional Catalyst Devices for Vehicle Emission Control

Wei  Li, GM Global R&D

The increasingly more stringent global emissions regulations have required OEMs to implement new catalyst technologies to further reduce emissions (hydrocarbon, CO, NOx, and PM).  As an example, NOx reduction technologies have been broadly introduced on light duty diesel vehicles in Europe since 2014 to meet Euro 6 standards.  Meanwhile proposed US Tier3/LEV3 and China 6 may require additional contents in exhaust aftertreatment systems, adding weight, cost, and creating packaging issues. Consequently OEMs, together with suppliers, have been actively developing integrated multi-functional devices to mitigate these issues. In this talk, I will review the latest industry developments and using literature reports and our own test results to highlight the potential and limitations of these devices and to provide guidance on future research needs and directions.
