Exhaust Filtration for High Number Efficiency

Mark  Stewart, PNNL

To date, the design of most Diesel Particulate Filter systems, and consequently, supporting modeling tools, have focused on meeting mass-based particulate standards. The adoption of number-based particulate standards could eventually lead to a shift in exhaust filter design parameters, especially when applied to new engine technologies including Gasoline Direct Injection and alternative strategies such as close-coupled filter placement. These issues will be discussed, along with the possibility of improving modeling tools to help meet associated challenges.
