The Challenges of Low Temperature Aftertreatment for Efficient Light Duty (LD) Combustion Engines – Broad Based Approaches and FCA Efforts

Craig  DiMaggio, FCA US LLC

Advanced aftertreatment systems for light duty vehicles will need to leverage new material technologies to support the emissions requirements of progressively more fuel efficient combustion engines. The twin objectives of satisfying significantly stricter Tier III and LEV III emissions standards, together with the mandated rapid improvements in vehicle fuel economy that deprive downstream catalyst systems of exhaust energy, are forcing the need for innovative catalyst technology and strategies that operate at much lower temperatures.  Approaches to this challenge coupled with additional broad based hurdles that must be overcome to produce a compliant aftertreatment component or system will be addressed. In response to this necessity, FCA activities in this area that relate to lean exhaust emissions control systems using innovative SCR and NSC materials will be highlighted.
