Soot Sensor Technology for OBD, Particulate Filter Load Estimation and PEMS Applications

Athanasios  Konstandopoulos, CERTH

The present work involves the development of a prototype, compact, real-time, on-board soot sensor technology and its experimental cross-assessment against an array of particulate measuring methods based on gravimetric, electrical mobility, aerodynamic, diffusion charging, photoelectric ionization and optical extinction techniques.  Practical use of the sensor technology is implemented in vehicle exhaust under steady state and transient conditions. Use of the sensor technology for several applications such as OBD, particulate filter load estimation and PEMS is demonstrated and appropriate configurations are presented.
