Soot Oxidation Impacted by Engine Oil-Derived Ash from a Gasoline Direct Injection Engine

Hee Je  Seong, Argonne National Laboratory

There have been enormous efforts in reducing the quantity of metal additives in engine oil used for internal combustion engines, as ash derived from metal additives adversely impacts catalysts used in emissions control systems. Also, ash is known to increase backpressure when particulate filters are used, which eventually deteriorates fuel economy. While negative impacts of ash are well known, its positive impact on soot oxidation reactivity has not received much attention. We verified from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and a bench-scale flow reactor that improved soot oxidation with ash presence is real in a gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine. In the presentation, soot oxidation mechanism and ash chemistry will be discussed for the better understanding of ash effects.
