Lean-NOx traps Focus Group
LNT focus group mission:
-
The LNT Focus Group is one of three planned technical collaborative groups operating under the Crosscut Lean Exhaust Emissions Reduction Simulation (CLEERS) program. CLEERS is an activity of the DOE Diesel Crosscut Team and is described at http://cleers.org. The purpose of the LNT Focus Group is to collaborate in the development of LNT simulation science. In order to promote understanding of the LNT technology, the focus group will:
- Define simulation approaches (kinetic, physical and numerical) that the participants could implement and test within their own simulation systems
- Identify validation experimental data sets such as reactor and engine data to refine the simulation approaches
- Further the technical discussions by publishing the results of its collaborations on the CLEERS website and in refereed journals in a timely fashion
This technical collaboration will be facilitated by regular web meeting (approximately monthly) and several face-to-face meetings per year. In addition to the technical collaborations, these discussions will:
- Be a sounding board to address and evaluate LNT technical issues as they arise
- Share the latest pre-competitive technical information
- Identify to government funding agencies the most fruitful areas for supported research
- Generate input for the CLEERS emissions control database
- Facilitate additional collaborations among Crosscut members, national labs, universities, and emissions component suppliers
Regular members of the LNT Focus Group are drawn from the Crosscut Team, but non-Crosscut members (e.g., universities and component suppliers) can also participate under Crosscut member sponsorship. Two co-leaders who will be the primary contact for technical coordination and meeting planning head the Focus Group. Net meeting and web services will be provided through the CLEERS computer and website at Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL).
Benefits to the participants include:
- Access to non -proprietary validation data and simulations to provide a technology wide benchmark for simulation
- A non-competitive forum for communication of device technology issues and concerns
- Facilitated collaborations (possibly proprietary) with other focus group members (esp. national labs and universities)
- Reduced need for companies to maintain broad in-house expertise on all aspects of the associated fundamental science
Participation does not require any funds-in, but each participant is expected to provide regular, contributions of data, technical analysis, or feedback on the usefulness/validity of information presented by others. Participation should be a corporate decision to facilitate these exchanges.
Action Items:
- Management review of participation
- Identification of a technical point-of-contact
- Internal agreement on an expedited information clearance procedure to facilitate information sharing at the monthly technical net meetings
