Comparative XPS and HRTEM of Real-World Soots

Randy  Vander Wal, USRA (non-profit)

A comparison between HRTEM images of soots from diesel engines, industrial boilers, jet engine exhaust and biodiesel fuels will be presented with inferences made as to the formation/combustion conditions. These results will be contrasted with XPS analyses which complement the HRTEM image data by revealing different types of carbon structure in addition to revealing the identity of oxygen functional groups upon the soot particle surface. Selected analyses of the HRTEM data will also be presented.
