Simulation and Optimization of DPF and SCR Systems

Roland  Wanker, AVL

This paper presents dedicated simulation models for the reduction of diesel emissions. Models and results are shown for two different cases. First, the control of particulate emissions is simulated by combined models of Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOC) and DPFs. Second, the control of NOx emissions is investigated by simulations of systems consisting of a DOC, urea/water injection and an SCR converter. For the simulation of these two cases a dedicated aftertreatment simulation workflow is applied. At early stages a 1D simulation tool is used to perform parameter identification and to do a basic system analysis. 3D CFD simulations are performed with the CFD code FIRE in order to capture multi-dimensional effects of selected worst-cases.
