Comparison of ammonia continuous measurement techniques from an SCR vehicle

Hajime  Ishii, National Traffic Safety and Environment Laboratory

Ammonia is as harmful as CO for human health, and ammonia emission from vehicles is thought to be higher in a case of using urea SCR NOx reduction catalyst. But there has been no authorized measurement method for Ammonia. In this study, four types of continuous measurement methods, Dual CLD, Mass Spectrometry, FTIR, and Diode Laser Spectrometry, are compared and evaluated by a urea SCR vehicle constant and transient cycle test. The Mass Spectrometry has the better sensitivity, and the Diode Laser Spectrometry has outstanding quick response.
