Development and implementation of a model based SCR control system

Praveen  Chavannavar, Caterpillar

With the relative maturation of the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology, the focus is shifting to optimizing the controls algorithm to more fully extract the inherent catalyst capability in terms of NOx reduction. This work examines a new approach to controlling the urea dosing rate based entirely on physical SCR models implemented in the ECM and its implications on the engine controls development process. This approach should require little to no application specific controls calibration, thereby resulting in significant time and cost savings while achieving high levels of NOx reduction.
