Reaction Kinetics for TWC Light-off

Andrew (Bean)  Getsoian, Ford Motor Company

Despite decades of investigation, the kinetics of CO and hydrocarbon oxidation and NO reduction on Rh catalysts under conditions relevant to three way catalysis remain incompletely understood. In previous work, we have reported on the relative importance of oxidation and steam reforming reactions for light alkane conversion. Here, we expand this investigation to conversion of olefins, NO, and CO. We highlight the important role of water in enhancing rates of CO oxidation and NO reduction, and examine role of support in altering the selectivity of NO reduction to NH3, N2, and N2O. This work provides experimental guidance for development of rate equations for use in TWC performance models.
