Flow distribution in a multi-functional exhaust filter

Ben  Jensen, PNNL

Multi-functional filters save cost and space on vehicles while delivering benefits such as superior cold-start performance. However, there are many trade-offs when combining some catalytic functionalities with exhaust filtration.  Reactions that require significant volumes of catalyst can present challenges in devices which must also effectively remove particulates while maintaining manageable backpressures.  Our study takes a closer look at catalyst placement in a multi-functional filter and effects on flow patterns and overall performance through micro-scale and device scale modeling.  Experiments were also conducted to estimate local properties of interest in a part with axial variations in coating.
