Variations on Soot Nanostructure and Reactivity from Low Emission Engines

Andre  Boehman, University of Michigan

In this talk, we will survey some recent work on the impacts of fuel injection strategies and dilute combustion on soot nanostructure from direction injection spark ignition (SI) and direct injection compression ignition (CI) engines.  Where possible, the impacts of these operating parameters on soot oxidation reactivity will be discussed as well.  Fuel injection strategy can be an important tool for suppressing spark knock in SI engines, and for suppressing particulate emissions in both SI and CI direction injection engines.  The variations in soot nanostructure, or lack thereof, can provide insights toward developing a mechanistic understanding of how fuel injection strategy is affecting soot formation and oxidation processes, while suppressing particulate emissions.
