Abstract:

Images of clear skies due to reduced human activity in recent times shows what is possible with cleaner mobility. With tightening regulations and adoption of the latest technologies have the potential to make clean air a permanent reality. This is a review of these regulations & highlights of technological advances in the last year or so. For those who may have attended my SAE review, this may still be worth your time as there will be sufficient new content based on recent conferences and regulatory developments. As each year, the talk will cover both light- and heavy-duty vehicles and cover both engine efficiency and criteria pollutant mitigation strategies. We will consider system level solutions for meeting post Euro 6/VI and California’s HD Low NOx regs, and also dive deeper into single-component technologies such as SCR and GPF. As time permits the talk will touch upon emerging pathways for reducing CO2 beyond 2025 – 2030 timeframe. I hope to provide sufficient evidence that we are moving towards near-zero emissions, and that ICE technologies will continue to play an important role!
