Review of Vehicle Engine Efficiency and Emissions

Abstract:
To say that 2020 was a special year would be an understatement. While we would like to forget most of it, there were major changes to the mobility sector and the drive towards sustainable transportation which are worth reviewing – and will be the subject of this talk. The focus on global warming has prompted almost daily announcements by countries and major automakers on targets to reach net zero carbon emissions. IC engines have achieved new records on brake thermal efficiencies and these are being used in dedicated hybrid architectures to deliver deep reductions in fuel consumption. Electrification has advanced rapidly in all its forms, whether hybrids or full electrics. The drop in human activity in the early part of the year provided a glimpse of drastic reductions in air pollution. This may be achieved permanently through new regulations and technologies targeting over 90% reduction in NOx for heavy-duty trucks and further stringent measures on gas and particulate emissions for passenger cars. None of these developments are easy or given, but will require significant innovation and execution in the coming decade. We review some of the promising pathways.
