Pore-scale studies of ceramic exhaust filters
Mark Stewart, PNNL
Several important aspect of exhaust filter performance, including backpressure and filtration efficiency, are heavily influenced by the structure of micro-scale flow passages through the filter wall. A number of filter substrates, having a range of porosities and pore size distributions, were examined using micro X-Ray CT and pore-scale flow simulations. Predictions of wall permeability and filtration efficiency were compared to data from fundamental experiments. Possible approaches to improving device-scale filter models are discussed.
