The Feasibility of an Alumina-Based Lean NOx Trap (LNT) for Diesel

In spite of improvements that have been made to the lean NOx trap (LNT) for diesel in recent years, current traps still do not maintain sufficient activity at low temperature (<200„aC), in part because they tend to be too susceptible to the thermal damage caused by the de-SOx treatments that are periodically required at high temperature (>650„aC). As an alternative to conventional formulations, we have developed a simple alumina-based LNT that appears to be well matched to the relatively low temperatures of diesel exhaust, exhibiting high NOx conversion efficiencies (80-90%) over the temperature range 150-300„aC. In addition, thermal damage during de-SOx is minimal since this process only requires about 1 minute at 600-650„aC. In this presentation, we describe details of the preparation and laboratory characterization of this new LNT formulation.
